GONADS -It's a serious message
Trust Ambassadors, Super League stars Andy Raleigh and Keith
Senior put themselves in the frame and played fun roles to help us
all understand a little more about the research the trust is
undertaking. We hope you like it - and you too will support
the Gonads Campaign.
Dr Johnathan Joffe is a consultant medical oncologist based at
Huddersfield Royal infirmary.
He is also a consultant in Leeds where he co-manages the regional
testicular cancer service with Dr Dan Stark and Professor Peter
Selby. Dr Joffe is the Chairperson of the National Cancer Research
Institute (NCRI) Testicular Cancer Clinical Studies Group (CSG),
which plans and coordinates research for testicular cancer across
the country. Dr Joffe and Dr Stark, on behalf of the NCRI Testis
CSG and also the Gynaecological CSG and Teenage and Young adults
CSG are coordinating an important research project, funded by the
Laura Crane Youth Cancer Trust, looking into the differences
between testicular and ovarian germ cell tumours in patients in
different age groups.
The research involves collaborations with laboratories and clinical teams across the UK and, also, collaboration with centres and specialists in the USA and Europe. It is hoped that this research will, for the first time, explain why these tumours behave differently in different age groups and will demonstrate the optimal way to treat and cure more patients with these cancers which are some of the most common in young people.
