Ideas for Patient Gifts by Sarah Dransfield

You may have seen that we have launched our Christmas appeal today to get special gifts to young cancer patients in hospital over the Christmas period.

I am in a unique position as I am now part of the charity team, but I also received gifts from the charity whilst I was undergoing treatment. So the team have asked my views on what would make a good gift for a young person in hospital… I have given it some thought and these are some of my suggestions…

Gift cards/vouchers
These are great because they give people the choice of getting something they really want and patients can spend most vouchers online whilst they are in hospital! I love fashion, so I'd love vouchers from places like ASOS, Topshop and of course River Island…. who have all the best models ;)

If you do choose fashion vouchers, then places that do both boys and girl clothes would be ideal and the department stores obviously have lots more than fashion so would be great for everyone.

Other great gift cards would be App Store and ITunes gift card from Apple or vouchers from Game for example.

Geek Chic
This covers all those great gimmicky things that nobody really needs but make really fun gifts. A great place to find this kind of stuff is on Firebox.com and Iwantoneofthose.com

Firebox has a Take better selfies lens kit that I would quite like to try and IWOOT has some cute cosy sock sets.

I really like the LED Lightboxes and you can get these all over now.

Experience Days/Gig Gift Cards
I know when I was spending time in hospital it was great to have things to look forward to, like festivals, gigs or just meals out with my family and friends. I thought experience days would make a really lovely gift. I would definitely suggest a gift voucher rather than selecting a particular experience because likes and hobbies can vary so much and of course what that person's ability at the time. A couple of places that do these experiences and the gift cards are virginexperiencedays.co.uk and www.redletterdays.co.uk

Or something like vouchers for concert tickets from somewhere like Ticketmaster would be great for people who like live music or comedy.

Some stuff for the boys
I've had a chat with some friends about gifts for the boys in case I am missing things for them! Beanie hats seem to be quite poplar. I have seen nice ones in Topman and Urban Outfitters. One has used it as an excuse to tell me what he wants from me for Christmas! He wants a Sega Smartphone Controller from Firebox.com :)

These are just some of my ideas and hopefully they will get you thinking. Anything you can donate would be gratefully received and we will ensure they are sent off in time to be opened by a young patient this Christmas.

Please ensure your gifts are with us by Monday 10th December. Thank you.
